THE4BEES – An End? Or a new beginning?

The Interreg Alpine Space Project “THE4BEES” (Transnational Holistic Ecosystem 4 Better Energy Efficiency through Social innovation) has now come to an end: The final event of this 3-year project successfully took place on 22 and 23 of October in Turin.

The starting point of this project was that “Energy is consumed by people rather than by buildings”. Therefore, the project focused on behavioural changes of users in public buildings in several European countries and a total of 14 partners.

To trigger behavioural changes, a combination of a “users first” approach has been combined with digital solutions to communicate changes in a visual and interactive way. The users have been motivated to change their individual behavior and have been involved interactively with co-creation labs and workshops to contribute to the project. The digital solutions included measurements that enabled alarms and adjustments as well as comparisons across rooms, times and sites as well as analytics.

The results have been used to give recommendations to users, businesses and policy makers to show them the value of “energy and comfort as a service”. This has been achieved through a combination of different principles, such as to give feedback to users, make comparisons to others, provide hints and tips and use storytelling.
During the project, many lessons have been learned, but we would like to emphasize four specific ones:

  • Awareness and involvement of all stakeholders is almost as important as monitoring a building
  • Digital solutions designed by and for users contribute to energy and CO2 savings, comfort and health improvement
  • Behaviour changes by users is a key element of the sustainable energy management of building
  • Data Visualization can trigger behaviour change

The final results of the project will be posted by Dec 2018, the official end of the project. However, this should not be the end of this approach, it should rather be the beginning into a more energy comsumption aware future!
