2018 to 2019

The goal of the planned research project ‘4D-SDIs’ is to elaborate and validate models, concepts, adaptive workflows and flexible implementation strategies for the development and implementation of high-resolution four-dimensional (spatio-temporal) geodata infrastructures (4D-SDIs). The project aims at the definition and validation of 4D-SDIs and the optimization of their implementation and operation by using standardized and reusable workflows. This goal includes the extension of available 2D spatial data infrastructures towards 3D spatial data infrastructures as well as the integration of indoor and outdoor environments of public administration and service buildings as well as critical infrastructure facilities - including the IoT components - based on their location and time into these 4D-SDIs. This is necessary because high-resolution 4D data is in many cases technically organized in a proprietary way and semantically non-aligned with each other. Thus, they are like island solutions: they stand alone, without connection to the whole.

The connection point of location and time is also pointed out by the European Commission, which labels IoT as ‘resources with identity that operate in “smart environments” and communicate with their social environment and other utilisation contexts using intelligent/harmonized interfaces’. To support the digital transformation of organizations in the best way possible, the project sets itself the objective to use the foundation of 4D-SDIs as the base to assist companies in the optimization of their process flows through an integration of an analytic ‘geo-intelligence’ - the “where”-perception (of companies) - as goal dimension of the digitization regarding enterprise and working environments. This is accompanied by the ‘linkage of virtual images of the reality and the physical world’.

In the research project 4D-SDIs, extensions of 2D SDI management strategies will be conceptualized and coordinated with user groups (e.g. administration and authorities) from a thematic point of view. On this basis, technical best practice prototypes will be developed and validated. In detail, a prototypical extension of available harmonized (throughout Austria) and standardized 2D geodata models towards standardized 3D and 4D geodata models and their organization in data containers will be conducted. To get a stable base for the resilient modeling of 3D and 4D indoor and outdoor environments, it is necessary to harmonize and link the information inventory technically, content-wisely and application-independently using semantic ‘loose-coupling’ strategies based on available building modeling standards from different application domains (architecture, planning, geoinformatics).

The 4D-SDI to be developed in this research project will be validated through an exemplary extension of datasets coming from basemap.AT with further dimensions (3D, 4D) regarding organisation, application and visualisation.

In conclusion, the aim of the project “4D-SDIs” is to prepare spatio-temporal, high-resolution infrastructures in terms of technical standardization and content-related harmonization. These are needed for a use within the manifold future tasks and requirements of the digitization (e.g. maintenance, enterprise integration, support of security management, etc.) and within context-sensitive enterprise organization information systems. This preparation also includes the development of ‘best practice’ approaches to ensure a sustainable and resilient organizational management.
